Saveur Highlights Kinston as the South’s Next Great Food Town
As part of the Economic Development Partnership of NC, Visit North Carolina’s public relations team, in partnership with the Lenoir/Kinston Tourism Development Authority, secured two stories in leading culinary magazine Saveur on the food scene in Kinston.
Visit North Carolina’s public relations team first pitched the journalist back in January and was able to convince him to visit Kinston in March. He was so excited by the destination he went back and pitched a story to his editor at the magazine and then returned earlier this summer to meet with locals and really develop the story.
The first article, titled “The First Lady of Carolina Cooking“, is about Kinston native and nationally acclaimed chef Vivian Howard and her decision to leave NYC and return to Kinston to open her own restaurant (Chef & The Farmer) and how much the area means to her. Vivian also shares some recipes with magazine readers in advance of her new cookbook coming out this Fall. Below is an excerpt:
“By raising our food traditions up, shining a light on them, and validating them, we’ve been able to give people a pride in the place they come from.”
The second article titled “Kinston, North Carolina is the South’s Next Great Food Town” showcases Kinston as a well-rounded food destination on the rise and highlights other Kinston area restauranteurs and businesses. Below is an excerpt.
“Beyond Vivian Howard’s restaurants, new ventures-a taqueria, a brewery, a boutique hotel-are revitalizing the town’s commercial district, and bringing in tourists. Here’s a look at a food destination in the making.”
Saveur magazine has a monthly circulation of 321,867 and its website gets 3.2 million unique monthly viewers so these two articles have generated great national exposure for Kinston and the state.
Placements like these cannot happen without great industry partners at a local level stepping up to help out. The Lenoir/Kinston TDA should be commended for their efforts.
We’d also like to thank you for your support of Visit North Carolina in our mission to unify and lead the state in developing North Carolina as a major destination for leisure travel, group tours, meetings and conventions, sports events and film production.
