Construction is continuing for Pioneer Hi-Bred, an agricultural research and development firm, and a division of the DuPont company.  It has invested $2.3 million in building a 26,000 square-foot research station in the U.S. 70 West Industrial Park.  Approximately 10 full-time employees are expected to begin conducting research on breeding, developing and testing corn and soybean products that are suited for growing in the drought and heat stressed southeastern United States.  Construction is slated to be complete and operations under way by this fall.

Presenting the Defense Logistics Agency Outstanding AbilityOne Program Vendor Award is (l to r) DLA Director Navy Vice Admiral Alan Thompson; Sammy Sanderson, LIB Skid Board department employee; and LIB Executive Director Ray Amyette.

A simple piece of plywood could mean the success or failure of a major military operation.

“For our troops in Afghanistan, often the only way to deliver food, water, ammunition, and fuel is by aerial delivery that is being parachuted in.” said Garland “Roy” Peay, Integrated Supplier Team Chief for DLA Aviation’s Airframes Division 1. Peay said these critical supplies are placed on these simple skid boards. Thanks to Lions Industries for the Blind, Peay said, aerial deliveries overseas are being sustained.

“Sometimes we (DLA Aviation) get in trouble for suppliers not performing,” said John Henley, Director Small Business, DLA Aviation. “This time the demand went through the roof and the supplier got us out of the jam,” he said. The spike in demand went from approximately 6,600 skid boards a month to more than 10,000 a month.

During the 14th Annual Business Alliance Awards ceremony held June 28th the Defense Logistics Agency honored industry, military and government partners who’ve helped the agency meet the needs of America’s warfighters over the past year.

As America’s combat logistics support agency, DLA has a global mission to provide Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines with all they need to stay mission-ready, Thompson said.

“But our DLA team could not successfully complete this mission without the support of our industry partners who are setting the standard all DLA suppliers strive to reach,” he added.

After being nominated by DLA Aviation, Lions Industries for the Blind was awarded the Defense Logistics Agency Outstanding AbilityOne Program Vendor. LIB was given the same recognition in 2005 after being nominated by DLA Land & Maritime.

Co-manager Tapan Patel said his family decided to renovate the gas station and put in several weeks of hard work because Skinner’s Bypass is a high-traffic area, with 40,000 cars passing through it every day. “We (focus) on service, because it’s kind of like a home business,” Patel said. “It’s like a mom-and-pop shop. It’s not like a corporation.”

It will consist of a main administrative building and four residential wings.  It is expected to employ 150 people.

If you take a ride around Kinston, it’s clear that the physical face of the downtown is undergoing dramatic change…for the better.

The transformation is coming to pass due to overarching, formal and informal partnerships between public and private entities, including agencies such as the Golden LEAF Foundation, the North Carolina Department of Transportation (DOT), the North Carolina Railroad, North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources, non profits such as the Community Council for the Arts, Pride of Kinston, and various agencies of the City of Kinston.

And private contributors and investors.

One new downtown project clearly illustrates an interlocking network of partners.
